End the meal on a sweet and festive note with this delicious apple galette—because, would it even be Rosh Hashanah without
an apple dessert? While it delivers maximum taste, it’s actually quite easy to make, satisfying your sweet tooth without major effort. Enjoy!
DOUGH
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄2 cup (1 stick) margarine
3 tablespoons ice water
FILLING
2 Macintosh (or your favorite) apples, peeled and sliced thinly
2 tablespoons sugar
1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 tablespoons apple butter Egg, for brushing
2 tablespoons turbinado sugar
Pistachios, crushed, for garnish Serve with ice cream, optional
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
2. Add the margarine and use your hands to mush the margarine and flour mixture together to form shaggy crumbs.
3. Add the ice water and gently fold it in until the crumbs form a dough.
4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes.
5. Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper and roll it out thinly into a circle about 13” in diameter.
6. Combine the cinnamon and sugar and add it to the sliced apples. (Do this step after you roll out the dough, not before, because you don’t want the apples to lose their juice and macerate.)
7. Spread the apple butter over the dough, leaving about 11⁄2” from the edge clean.
8. Arrange the apple slices over the apple
butter.
9. Fold the edges over the apples gently,
then brush with egg wash.
10. Sprinkle turbinado sugar over the whole
thing, including the crust.
11. Bake for 35-40 minutes at 400°F.
12. Cool on a cooling rack, then slice and enjoy!
Serve cold or at room temp
